Online communities, influencers & conspiracy movements
Is my online community a cult?
A cult no longer needs a compound. Today, high-control groups can form around an influencer, a forum, a chat server or a theory, with members who've never met in person. The patterns are the same, just delivered through a screen, all day, every day.
Questioning official stories isn't the problem. Healthy scepticism is good. The warning signs are about whether this community lets you question it.
What a healthy online community usually looks like
- Members disagree openly, and moderators allow it.
- You can log off for a week and nobody guilt-trips you.
- Claims are backed by sources you can check, including ones the group doesn't control.
- Your offline relationships stay intact.
Warning signs online
- "Do your own research", but only from approved sources. Anything that contradicts the group is fake, paid or part of the plot.
- Failed predictions never count. The date passes, and the story changes or the goalposts move.
- The influencer or "insider" can't be questioned, and critics are banned, mocked or targeted with harassment.
- An awake vs. asleep worldview: family and friends who don't believe are pitied, despised or cut off.
- Endless consumption: hours of videos, posts and livestreams each day, with fear of missing the next revelation.
- Pressure to pay: subscriptions, donations, merchandise, courses or "exclusive" access.
- Calls to act against "enemies" online or in real life.
Why it's hard to see from inside
Online groups are available 24 hours a day and recommendation algorithms keep serving more of the same, so the group's view can come to fill almost everything you see. Belonging to a community that "sees the truth" can feel meaningful and even heroic, especially if you've felt ignored or alone.
