MLMs, sales teams & business coaching
Is my MLM or business programme a cult?
Wanting financial freedom, flexible work or a supportive team is completely reasonable. Some multi-level marketing companies, sales organisations and "get rich" coaching programmes use the same psychological pressure as high-control groups to keep people spending, recruiting and believing.
What a healthy business opportunity usually looks like
- Honest, written figures on what typical participants actually earn after costs.
- Your income comes mainly from selling to real customers, not from recruiting people or buying stock yourself.
- You can say no to events, upgrades and stock without being shamed.
- You can leave and get refunds on your terms, with no social fallout.
Warning signs in a business setting
- "Anyone who fails just didn't believe enough." Losses are blamed on your mindset, never on the business model.
- Pressure to buy: stock, rank qualifications, training, events or coaching, often on credit.
- Your friends and family become prospects, and those who say no become "dream stealers" or "negative".
- Critics and ex-members are dismissed as bitter quitters, and you're told not to read "negativity" online.
- Leaders are idolised, with stage shows, lifestyle displays and testimonials you're encouraged to copy.
- Loaded language and rituals: special terms, chants, ranks and recognition that bind your identity to the company.
- Your social life becomes the team, so quitting would mean losing your friends, not just a job.
Why it's hard to see from inside
Consumer regulators in the UK and US have repeatedly warned that most people in multi-level marketing earn little or nothing after expenses. Inside, though, every success story is celebrated and every loss is kept quiet, and people who have invested heavily find it hard to accept that the model, not their effort, is the problem.
